Undated Large Slides, Pt. 2: Restaurants @ Disneyland

If you’re not hungry now, you will be after this post! Shot #1 is Aunt Jemima’s over at the corner of Adventureland and Frontierland. Here’s a closeup of the patrons enjoying their flapjacks:

A little further down the path is the Chicken Plantation Restaurant, sponsored by Swift’s Premium Meats. With the lanterns hanging overhead, it sure does look like the inside of the Blue Bayou Restaurant!

Over in Tomorrowland, there are two “bars” that you can visit; The Space Bar & The Yacht Bar...just don’t get any ideas about having any booze at either bar!

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post, the striped "tent" that housed the Edison Square display started out as the original Art Corner display, as seen in this previously posted photo:

Anyone care to buy a Peter Pan or Alice cel for $25?

Mystery photo: A reader sent in this family photo, and was hoping for help in trying to identify the location. Any takers on this one?

  2. Wow, SO MANY amazing photos. Whoever took these obviously is from the present, and they have a time machine, because they know just what we want to see today!

  3. These are yummy gems! You're spoiling us Dave - Thanks! The plantations resemblance to the Blue Bayou Restaurant is uncanny....

In the Yacht Bar photo, what's with the Ore's and Life ring on the wall to the left? Gotta love the planters, flag ropes and space-age lights!

  4. Could that last photo have been taken in Fantasyland near that round restaurant that sat next to the Fantasyland Skyway entrance? I know it had a wall behind it with attraction posters (which it looks like there might be one behind Mickey's ear) and it also had those long sunscreen/shade things that hung on wires over the seating. That's my guess!

  5. Very nice selection, random but tasty, just like a Picture Poo-Poo Platter.

Beautiful shot of the Plantation. One of the best tourists shot's I think I've seen. And yes, I think they went back to this restaurant to inspire the Blue Bayou ... now THAT'S "plusing"!

Although the 1956 Tomorrowland has a reputation for being cramped by a tight budget, after a season or two, you'd never know. The "bars" are really a high-water mark in mid-century architecture. Who would not look at this and go gaga for Googie?

I am curious about the "split screen" art corner display. Did you restore the color on the left, or desaturated the image on the right? I am a Nimrod when it comes to manipulating color channels in Photoshop. I just can't imagine you can you can get those colors back from what looks like a lavender monochrome.

And as for time machines and Peter Pan cels, I'd love to go back in time and get a Mr. Smee cel for Senator Frank -- and we'll just leave it at that.

  6. Unfortunately, the split-screen photo was a result of half of the frame being overexposed; i did my best to make it less glaring, but obviously it still shows. Tokyo - thanks for the info - I am sure you are correct!

  7. Boy, that's the Antie Myma's that I remember (a nic name we all called it back then). They would open at 7:30 am for employees, and it was a fill-in for the very small employees calfateria. Sitting outside by the river in the cool of the morning, after everything had been hosed down with your pancakes and eggs, was a pleasure-full memory that I still try to duplicate. (IHOP just doesn't cut it). After they "upgraded" to a more plantation style, and a lot larger, it just didn't have that same feeling

Is that a cigarette vending machine at the left side of the Space Bar?

  9. It sure is a cigarette machine. When you push it in Photoshop, you can see the top front panel is a mirror, and has the usual pull-selectors for about 18 brands.

  10. Regarding the mystery location (last picture in this set with the family posing with Mickey & Minnie), you can see blue and white shade screens and the old drum-style seats in between the characters.

On April 1, Gorillas D.B. posted a look-down shot at Dumbo. In the upper right corner are blue and white shade screens. When the shadows are removed by pushing in Photoshop, you can see the same style stools.
