April 1964, Pt. 1: Disneyland Railroad

Back to black and white, here are a few from April 1964, beginning with a shot taken by a guest approaching the entrance to the park. It’s springtime, and just as it is today, the park was in full bloom. And how about those attraction posters in shot #2?

By this time, the Chicken Plantation was gone, the Haunted Mansion exterior was finished, and construction on New Orleans Square had begun. In addition, the Frontierland Depot was moved across the tracks and this new waiting area had been built:

  1. Is that a Frontierland ticket booth off in the distance (behind the tree and lampost) in that third photo?

  4. I really liked the red, white, and blue colors of the can-can girls for the Golden Horseshoe poster. Those are the corporate colors of the show's sponsor (Pepsi Cola), and it's a friendly way to promote their sponsorship without being obnoxious.

  5. It is interesting to see the Rainbow Caverns poster still up, even though the attraction had been upgraded and the name changed to Nature's Wonderland. I guess since it was still part of the attraction and there were posters in stock, the park decided to use them.

  6. TokyoMagic!: Yes, that is a ticket booth in the distance.

Matterhorn: From my close scrutiny of guidebooks and periodicals, even after the 1960 upgrade, Rainbow Caverns was considered a major part of the attraction and was often named in descriptions of the Mine Train. It's convenient that the poster doesn't give the attraction name!

  7. Okay, you aren't saying it Dave, so I'll say it for you....Thufer, check out Dave's fantastic painting of the Golden Horseshoe attraction poster...in color!

Sorry Dave, I don't think I've ever commented on your paintings before, but they are all incredible!
