Early Tomorrowland Exhibits: Dutch Boy Paint Gallery
Today’s installment of the Tomorrowland Exhibit series shows photos from the Dutch Boy Paint Gallery, which lasted from March 1956 until 1963, featuring “Our Future in Colors.” The other 3 photos I have from this exhibit feature the color disks on the ceiling. Guests could "have fun with color" by arranging the color wheels; musical notes would let you know whether you’d picked a good or a bad combo! First up is from January 25, 1956:
August 1956:

As an extra bit of fun, here are some pages from the 1957 Dutch Boy Paint Disneyland Coloring Book; feel free to get out your Crayolas for this one!
What a caption!
For Katella Gate, here is the closeup of the ceiling banner from yesterday’s post:

The rotating gels on the ceiling of this exhibit have always fascinated me, especially with the suggestion that the dominant color of the room changed like a light show.
ReplyDeleteThanks also for the close up of the Monsanto banner... I am surprized that it reads "Science dedicated..." rather than "Monsanto is dedicated..." since Monsanto was picking up the tab for this exhibit.
That Dutch Boy coloring book used to fetch pretty high prices at collector's shows. Now you can get it for $5 on ebay... amazing!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful glimpse back at a time when the American corporation wasn't viewed as 'the enemy'.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave---
Wow...
ReplyDeleteI am actually speechless about the caption on the ice cream coloring page.
George - I'm just curious to know if the caption was a "wink" or just a product of the times when it had a different meaning.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it was a "wink"... It used to have an innocent meaning. Remember the Flintstones' theme song: "We'll have a gay old time..." It didn't have today's alternate meaning back then.
ReplyDeleteCool Post, love the coloring book! I have one, but the pages are vivid yellow and some of that pages were colored in by an infant! Not sure about the Ice Cream comment, but that guy reminds me of the Wizard of Oz!
