Disneyland Trip, Undated, Pt. 1

It’s series time again, folks. Our photographer chose to develop his slides at an economy photo retailer that saved pennies by not date stamping the mounts...those cheap bastages! Anyway, for all the Sherlock Holmes wannabes out there, this just adds to the fun. Based on the population number, that places this image between August and October 1959. Our trip begins today at the Main Street Station, and then gives us an exciting glimpse of a map showing attractions yet to be!

Alice is now open, as well as the Monorail, which confirms this batch as after 1959. Pirates of the Caribbean is still being called a Wax Museum, The Haunted Mansion is The Haunted House (also, note location on the map; originally it was slated to be much closer to the Jungle Cruise). Liberty Street and Edison Square are still in green light mode, too.

See more vintage and contemporary Disneyland photos at my main website.

  1. Hey Dave- the map shows the Matterhorn and the Monorail as coming attractions, as well as the Columbia and the Grand Canyon diorama. I would date the slides as early 1958. I would also love to know what happened to that overhead map with all the coming attractions painted in....

  2. Patrick - if you look closely, it actually says "Now Open" beneath the Sub, Monorail, Matterhorn, and Columbia. WIsh you were right though...

  3. The photo seems to be from 1957 or 1958 or before (though obviously could have been displayed later)... you can see the Viewliner out there over the lagoon. And they've made it look like what's now the Old Admin Building has been constructed and houses the Grand Canyon Diorama, when it should be further northeast. Surely an interesting composite photo, though. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Haven't got a clue why it would say now open because there is no Monorail, no Matterhorn and no Alice ride. But never the less I can see the Viewliner --- great pictures.

  5. I remember seeing that framed photo, so it had to be no earlier than June of 1959. The photo is of an earlier aerial shot that was available. Therefore; the photo itself was not up to date, but was just used to indicate to the public where things were. I would think that there is more evidence in the first pic to date the series. The "population" number (can't read it), and Walt's hand car that was not always there, and the colored gravel around the entrance "Mickey".

  7. Holy Cow! That is an amazing map and a great photo. Wonder where that map is now. Probably buried in landfill under The Block at Orange.

  8. Dave,

The park map is a great shot. Awesome find!

Uh...I have no idea when it was taken, though. ;)

  9. I had no idea the exterior of the Grand Canyon Diorama building had a huge 'Disneyland' painted on it! They should do that today with that plainly obtrusive grey cinderblock structure that sits in roughly the same area overlooking the bus stops.
