Vintage Subs

From August 3, 1959 (not the 4th, but the 3rd!) is this view of the original Submarine Voyage. Other than the monorail, with the gray of the subs and the uniforms of the cast members, this could be mistaken for a military zone! I prefer the 20k theming that Disney World used for their Sub ride, as shown in this Oct. 1972 view:

3 view from June 1964, starting with a closeup of the Patrick Henry (I wonder what kind of reception they get with that little antenna up front?)

Last one for today is from January 1968:

Eagle-eye reader Mr. Mouse Monthly noticed a cast member on top of the Monorail track in the previous photo. Let's zoom in!

For anyone interested in an update on my Main Street painting, here is a shot I took this morning:

And just out of curiosity, is anyone else out there doing the Disneyland Half Marathon this Monday?

  2. I know that I rode the subs before they were painted yellow, but they just look so different. It is kind of hard for me to believe they lasted as long as they did that color.

My first visit to WDW wasn't until after they had closed the 20K subs. It would have been great to ride that.

I will be there during the half marathon but not participating. Had I know we would be down there this weekend I think we would have participated in the 5k fun run on Sunday.

  3. I remember those 20k subs from Disney World. That ride was best to ride on at night, it really felt like the sub was going down 20,000 leagues under the sea (at least to a 9 year old boy).
Thanks Dave you brought back some good memories.

That little antenna on the sub is for the pilots. They would talk to the ride coordinators to keep all on schedule, and to alert everyone if things went wrong.

  6. Is that a guy standing on the monorail track, above the escalator, in the last pic of the Submarine Voyage?!?
