Yet another favorite “lost” area is this area in Fantasyland that used to be home to the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship Restaurant and Skull Rock. Ripped out during the Fantasyland remodel and replaced by Dumbo. Moving on from my lament, here are 5 great photos from March 1968. my fave is the last one, which gives a nice overview from the (also now defunct) Skyway.

How about them shades on the lady in red in pic 3 WOW she's ready for some serious sunspot activity!! Loved the pics over the last 3 days. The late sixties is the time of my teens and I must have gone to the park a hundred times. Thanks Dave, you are doing an awsome job!!! The website is looking way cool!!!!!!!!!!!! DD
ReplyDeleteHoly ****, great shots! This is a very missed part of Disneyland for me! However, with the recent popularity of pirates, can you imagine the crowds and chaos that would occur had they kept this in place?
ReplyDeleteHoly Shattering Bananas James, you have a way with words! And yes, you are right - everything old is new again, and Skull Rock and the Pirate Ship would be right in step now, just as the Tahitian Terrace would be very "in" as well.
ReplyDeleteDave, on a serious note, that last shot is truly amazing. You've got the ship, the dining area, skull rock, casey jr., and small world all in the same frame! My 14 year old daughter is going nuts wondering why this doesn't exist anymore.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you know this, because I only recently found out: there is a "recreation" of the Skull Rock at the Disneyland Hotel. I have only gotten a quick glimpse of it, but it does not appear to be anywhere near as cool as the original. Ironically, the Pirate Ship was there for years WITHOUT Skull Rock. How wacky is that to have a ship in asphalt?!?
ReplyDeleteDave, great shots. I really like the one with the couple sitting at the edge of the water. Her sunglasses are awesome.
ReplyDeleteLove the cool vintage theme trashcans and "Kodak Picture Spot" sign. And that last pic is an awesome shot, great post!
