Golden Horseshoe Wednesday

Here are 2 more from my 1963 batch of Golden Horseshoe photos. I always think of Wild West or Hillbilly entertainment when it comes to the GH, but as yesterday’s post of Charlie Barnet and today’s photo of dancing shows, the GH was apparently sometimes used as a nightclub. Disney Dutchman identified the band as the Elliot Brothers Orchestra, with Lloyd on trombone and Bill on sax. I also love this second shot taken before opening, with the bartender just waiting and an unidentified gent enjoying a cig.

See more vintage and contemporary Disneyland photos at my main website.

  1. The Stan Kenton photo and the couples dancing are probably from Date Nites at Disneyland. A unique concept with a ticket book with admission for two but only useable after 6 PM on Friday and Saturday nights. Disneyland was a place to go to hang out with your girl, do some dancing to fairly big name entertainment and to ride the rides. The ticket books are very cute 1960s graphics.

  2. Thanks for the info Matterhorn. The photo of the couples dancing is marked BigBand63Elliot’s on the back; not sure if that means it’s Don Elliott’s band or not.

  4. Love the photo with the dancers! I like the "bartender" too, though he didn't serve anything more potent than Pepsi.

  5. Pepsi was the beverage of choice for the GH. Unless you count that wedding anniversary held there in mid July of '55. Great photos Dave. Hey, Matterhorn do you have any photos of those date night ticket books?

  6. Hey gang, does anyone know if the backdrop of the Mark Twain pulling into the dock is a Collin Campbell painting?

  7. Great Pic Dave!! The bands name is the "Date Niters". The two in the front are the Elliot Brothers - Lloyd on trombone and Bill on sax. They were also known as the Elliot Brothers Orchestra.

  9. Amazon - good question about the backdrop! It looks like it may well be Campbell to me - I bet Kevin Kidney would know for sure...
