Adventureland Gate at Disneyland, 1950’s

Here’s an awesomely retro view of the Adventureland gate, complete with retro tourist. Must have been early in the morning as there is nobody else to be found.

Thanks to "Tangaroa" for identifying this shot as The Living Desert.

See more vintage and contemporary Disneyland Adventureland photos at my main website.

  1. The second photo is from Natures Wonderland Railroad. I will let Tangaroa post the exact location as he is the expert on the ride. It is a nice shot and unusual shot, possibly taken from the Disneyland Railroad.

  2. The Living Desert my friend.... the Living Desert...

This is actually your first view of the desert on the attraction, as you came over the hill and worked your way down into the area... Those are proghorn antelope, and a watering hole... there should be more animals around it though, so I'm assuming this is a 1970s shot.

Arrrrgh - I'm dealing with that Adventureland arch right now (I'm doing some signage for the Pirates 2 premiere down at Disneyland) - and it's changed a lot since this photo! I believe the one in place now is totally different - based on scale & lettering, etc... on the current one... Cool photos - thanks again for sharing!

  3. Tangaroa: I am adding another one from the same batch of the Adventureland arch on my regular website. The date on the slide for the Living Desert is February, 1965. Thanks for the help - feel free to identify any of the slides I don't have info for on my website.

  4. Nice slides! The shot of the watering hole with the antelope looks so lush and green. Somewhere I have an almost identical view, only there is almost no greenery. I'll post it on my blog tomorrow for comparison. Is there a critter on top of the rocks, sort of upper left? Or are my eyes just playing tricks on me? If there IS a coyote or whatever, he is gone in my own photo.

  5. I believe it is a coyote; I'll zoom in when I get home on the original and check to be sure. The original is just the slightest bit out of focus (was probably taken on a moving train).

  6. Yep! That's a coyote... There were several more on the tops of the buttes - just out of view of the slide. You guys know that the rockwork in the picture is still there - just in front of Big Thunder BBQ, right?
