If you have the gumption to put out the negativity, then how about having the same gumption to put your name out there? Regardless, this column does not mention Blaine Gibson (who I am a huge fan of) because it is about Lee. Maybe you missed the name of the post. And if you don't mean to be disparaging...well, best not to make disparaging remarks.Davelandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10720475138513029144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29249921.post-8370685895994336852011-03-25T18:56:44.996-07:002011-03-25T18:56:44.996-07:00Wow, not even ONE mention of Blaine Gibson?
With...Wow, not even ONE mention of Blaine Gibson?

With all due respect, something Lee, Valerie Edwards and so many others fail to understand is that to be effective, these portrait sculptures need to be LESS "authentic" and more "theatrical" so they'll ultimately be more believable under show lighting. I've stood a foot away from Lee's Lincoln and it's nice work, but in the show it looks phony.

Go look at work-lights-on photographs of Blaine's Lincoln and you'll see how exaggerated some of the coloring, etc. is. But in the show… Blaine's Abe was amazing; much better than Lee's.

Mr. Romaire is a super nice guy and I wish him all the luck in the world. Still, I hope he learns the lesson that Valerie's multiple failed attempts (and subsequent dismissal from WDI) to come up with a decent Obama sculpture taught all involved: Sometimes, when it comes to realistic human portrait sculpture, make sure the thing looks good from 20 feet away.

This is, of course, all just my opinion and is not meant to disparage Lee in any manner. As I said, he's a terrifically talented man. I just feel his Lincoln sculpture missed the mark for the purpose of making the audience forget that it's just a robot with a rubber mask up on that Opera House stage.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29249921.post-50929443367236965022011-03-25T05:39:20.630-07:002011-03-25T05:39:20.630-07:00Fascinating interview!
