With a good director in her teen films, Shirley was fantastic. Lang didn't really have a good handle on the actors or the pace of the film.Davelandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10720475138513029144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29249921.post-34349869451958673732020-12-07T13:35:51.765-08:002020-12-07T13:35:51.765-08:00Also one of my favorites! All the children in the Land of Unborn Children can act circles around Shirley, especially the young lovers, young Lincoln and the little sister. Still, with all it's faults, I am drawn to watch it everytime I see it listed. (I also wanted to have Light and Tylette's costumes!!!) However, had "Oz" not been such a breakaway hit for Judy Garland, Darryl Zanuck would never have considered "The Blue Bird" for Shirley. Indirectly you can credit "Snow White" for "The Bluebird," but the real connection is Zanuck wanting to beat MGM at their own game and show that he could upstage them with his own star...without loaning her out to Mayer.Davelandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10720475138513029144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29249921.post-84226398522496208192011-05-09T21:00:14.481-07:002011-05-09T21:00:14.481-07:00Dave, I've always thought that Fox's '...Dave, I've always thought that Fox's 'The Bluebird' was not an answer to MGM's 'Wizard of Oz', but rather - like 'Wizard' & Fleischer's 'Gulliver's Travels' and Paramount's 'Alice in Wonderland' - an answer to the first big feature-length children's smash...

A little thing called, 'Snow White'.Dreemfinderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12604572363076670321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29249921.post-40980587494669274112011-05-01T08:59:25.304-07:002011-05-01T08:59:25.304-07:00I have never seen this movie, but somehow was awar...I have never seen this movie, but somehow was aware of it when I was growing up, and even then I knew that it was unfavorably compared to "The Wizard of Oz". The thought of a bratty Shirley (or ANY child actor) is a turnoff, but I am kind of curious to check this film out.Major Pepperidgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09843598326995116014noreply@blogger.com
