The Coolest Skull

I have become pretty jaded about many vintage Disneyland shots. It has to be a really cool one to get my attention any more. This November 1964 image reached out and grabbed me by the throat. This is definitely the best closeup Skull Rock Cove shot I have in my collection. I don't believe it was shot from the Skyway, but rather from the Pirate Ship itself.

This little area behind the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship Restaurant in Fantasyland was like an undiscovered treasure. Tucked away between the Ship and Casey Junior, it not only provided eats it also provided a well-themed getaway.

Here's a previously posted shot from March 1965 giving a better overall view of the area.

More Skull Rock Cove photos at my main website.

Just imagine if they put big bloodshot eyes in the skull. It would be creeeeepy!

As a kid and young adult, that "undiscovered" treasure was where I ate most of my Disneyland meals besides the Tomorrowland Terrace. For atmosphere, there was nothing like it. Skull Rock Cove was my "Court of Angels" back in those days. When it was gone, I was a bit saddened and disappointed. Thanks, Dave.

Thank you Dave! This is a great shot. The grotto was one of the best spots in Old Disneyland and I miss it a lot.

When I am a billionaire, I will build my own Storybook Land with the Canal Boats,Casey Jr and the Pirate ship in my back yard and my office will be in the back cabin of the pirate ship. I will eat nothing but tuna salad sandwiches and apple tarts. I will spend my days riding the train and the boats and relaxing in the grotto.

Sigh.

These are fantastic photos, but I am intrigued by the area shown in the upper right corner of the last photo. What do you think that flat area is? Are those light standards of some type? The top of the Fantasyland Train Depot? Inquiring minds want to know ....

Please don't become jaded ... we need you! You continue to amaze me with your finds that take me back to the Disneyland of my childhood. I appreciate each and every photo you post, and your closeups are often astounding!

Here's to a cooler San Diego too!

Yes PWover 50 - that is part of the Fantasyland Train Depot. Thanks for the encouragement - still plugging away! The air conditioner was turned off today. Yay!
