July 1960 Visit

The Good News: These rare views are over 40 years old. The Bad News: These rare views are over 40 years old. Expect color shifts. Expect fading. OK, now that the disclaimer has been made, let’s get down to biz. As usual, the Daveland Tour starts at the entrance to Disneyland and the Main Street Train Station; today’s series is no exception! Once through the tunnel, we turn back to see the Fred Gurley at the station, ready to take a Grand Circle Tour around the park.

By the time our photographer made it up to the Station, another train had pulled in. Check out this load of guests just chompin’ at the bit to get to the Frontierland Station!

Plenty of transportation choices available on Main Street, including these horseless carriages.

For the more traditional park guest, a Surrey may be the ride of choice; and with the price of gas these days, 10¢ a ride seems purty darn good!

I always thought that the Surrey was black. Not sure if I've ever seen it with the red paint...

The Red Surrey is new to me too, I like the bright yellow wheels! These are an amazing set of Main Street Vehicle photos! THANKS DAVE!!! Ps. Since I guessed correct on yesterday’s post, can you share with us what your new camera is? Super images by the way!

The Surrey shot has a nice peek in the background at the area where Guided Tour Garden would later be built...

Progressland is right, that final shot gives us a great peek at an area seldom photographed. Thanks, Dave.

As I recall, I think the surrey was electric, and was a favorite of Walt for VIPs. However; I don't remember it being a ride for the general public (at least not during my days at the Park). Maybe Vintage Disneyland Tickets can tell us if it ever was listed on a ticket like the trolley, etc. I remember seeing red, green and yellow ones.

The Surrey was listed on the "A" ticket since 1955. Sometimes called "Surreys or Wagons" the last appearance was 1967: http://vintagedisneylandtickets.blogspot.com/2007/11/a-ticket-part-2-1960s.html.
